Over the 15 years we’ve spent working with Yersinia pestis (plague) we’ve been fortunate to see how this pathogen captures the public interest. Sporadic plague pandemics have altered the course of human history and left cultural fingerprints wherever they happened. 

However, the pathogens that now tend to kill the most people worldwide each year are very, very common. Most have evolved to live on us all the time. Others routinely circulate. They cause severe infection in 70 million people worldwide, and 1.7 million people in the U.S. each year. Most are preventable .
